1 Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, 2 but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. 3 That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither—whatever they do prospers.
It doesn’t take very long for our plants and grass to wither or dry up. The afternoon sun in Colorado can be pretty brutal, especially because there is very little moisture in the air. I didn’t turn on my sprinkler system as early as I usually do this spring and my backyard suffered. Big patches dried up or were burned.
But guess what?
Once I started watering it, eventually it all came back and is nice and green now.
That reminded me of God’s Word in Psalm 1, talking about how our life is blessed when we are connected to our God and his Word. God’s Word is the life-giving stream of water our faith, our soul, and our life need.
When we are meditating on God’s Word and filling our heart with it, we thrive. Our faith is strong and growing. We are alive, full of more and more desire not to imitate and be in league with this wicked world, but rather to live for God and glorify him.
Do you remember the times in your life you felt far from God? Do you remember the times there was little desire to trust in God or pray to him? Do you remember the times you spent more time participating in wickedness than godliness? Those were the times you had turned off the sprinkler system of God’s Word to your heart. The life-giving stream of God’s teaching wasn’t hitting your heart. Growth had stopped and withering set in.
Restart that growth and walk with God by meditating on the Word of God. Find a psalm or Bible passage you especially love and think about it. Meditate on it. Pray it. Memorize it. If you’re connected to the Word, stay that way! Don’t turn off access to your God because it’s the key to a life that is fulfilled, a life lived for God, the life God wants you to have.
