22 Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. 23 They are new every morning, great is your faithfulness.
How was your weekend? How was last week? Was it stellar or stinky? Was it something to write home about or something you would rather just write off as a total loss? No matter how well or poorly it went, there is a constant & reliable word in your life.
Jeremiah the prophet spoke about it in the book of Lamentations. The last months and years had been awful for him and the people of God. They saw so much death and destruction throughout the land of Judea and in the city of Jerusalem. It was downright heartbreaking. Jeremiah describes it and laments about it in the Bible book called Lamentations. And yet, there in the middle of the book are the beautiful two verses above. “Your compassions never fail. They are NEW every morning; great is your faithfulness.” These verses were the inspiration for the hymn Great Is Thy Faithfulness.
God’s faithfulness and his mercy were the constant in Jeremiah’s life. They were the thing that woke Jeremiah up in the morning. They were the source of strength and relief in Jeremiah’s every day. Whether the day or week had been awful or horrid or worse, God’s faithfulness and mercy were still constant. They were present to provide Jeremiah with forgiveness, life, sustenance, and so much more. The mercies of the Lord shone brightly like the rising sun, giving strength to Jeremiah’s weaknesses and replacing his sadness with joy.
Today, before you go about your day, no matter how bad things were, count the mercies of God to you today. Count your life and your breath, the blessings that surround you, and most especially the certainty of salvation through faith in Christ. That just scratches the surface to reveal the new mercies of your God, today.
No matter how you would characterize last week, trust in this: The Lord’s mercies are present, reliable, and new for you today. Your God did that for you without fail.
