But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy.
The nature of many things in the world could be summed up in phrases like this: What have you done for me lately? Why should I consider you for this? What value or worth can you bring to this?
If you want someone to notice you, consider you, hire you, select you, or invest something in you, that person wants to know what you have done to deserve it. What achievement, what great accomplishment do you have that warrants that kind of attention.
Thankfully, God doesn’t act like that.
When God saved you it wasn’t because of what you brought to the table. He didn’t save you because of your great accomplishments or achievements. Titus 3 says the exact opposite. He saved us because of his mercy.
God sent his Son. That’s his kindness and love. His kindness and love appeared. Jesus the Son of God came to earth, for one purpose. God saw how lost you were. He saw how you couldn’t save yourself. He saw how lost you were and he had mercy on you.
God’s mercy, his love, his compassion moved him to do the most amazing thing ever. He saved you from your sins. He rescued you from guilt. He made you his own people. He saved us by the death and resurrection of Jesus.
You can enjoy the gift of God’s salvation and have confidence it’s yours not because of performance. You don’t have to despair when you look unworthy of God’s attention or gaze. Your salvation and status as child of God isn’t based on what you’ve done for him lately. It’s based on what he did for you.
