Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
God sees his projects to completion. What God starts doing, he finishes. That’s refreshing to hear for two reasons.
First of all, that doesn’t describe me. I easily can be sidetracked by other things. If I encounter roadblocks in a project I can grow frustrated or annoyed. I more often than not need things to go smoothly so a project can be completed. Every so often I can just push through and get things done in spite or opposition or difficulty. But there are plenty of times that isn’t that case.
The second reason that is so refreshing to hear is this: The project, what Paul calls a “good work” in Philippians is preserving us in faith and bringing us home to heaven someday. Thank God that is not our job.
God began a good work in us when we were brought to faith.
At that moment, God made us a promise.
The faith he planted, he would preserve it. He would grow it. He would turn that faith into sight when we were brought to heaven.
There are plenty of obstacles to that, including us! Whatever gets in the way, God’s going to push through it. Whatever is distracting, God’s going to remove it. He has a job to do, namely, bringing his people to heaven. God is going to see that important task to completion. You can bank on it.
