I rejoice in following your statutes as one rejoices in great riches.
How would you react if you won the lottery? The big one! You know, millions upon millions of dollars. Or how would you react if a relative or friend of yours passed away leaving you more money you could spend the rest of your life? Maybe as you read this you think about people whose lives became worse after winning a big jackpot or receiving a tremendous inheritance and so you say you wouldn’t change at all. It wouldn’t have an effect on you. You would have very little reaction.
But let’s be honest, if you actually received a gigantic sum of money out of the blue, wouldn’t you be just a little excited? Of course! Be honest. You would rejoice! You would be ecstatic! I know I would.
In the same vein, don’t we also rejoice at the reality we have God’s written Word? Psalm 119:14 says that very thing. God’s written Word is his will for our lives. It shows us what we need to do and at the same time haven’t done. It shows us the great love he has for us by sending his Son to rescue us from those sins. It gives us a road map on how to live a life that glorifies God and brings blessing to our lives. It provides strength when weak and peace when troubled. The Word of God does all that without our effort. We simply open it and read it and God goes to work in our hearts.
God’s Word is a great treasure, a treasure greater than any on earth, a treasure worth rejoicing in.
